Commanders Crown Daniels: Heisman Hero Headlines New Era in Washington
The Washington Commanders have found their quarterback of the future,
selecting reigning Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels with the second
overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. Daniels becomes the highest-drafted
quarterback by Washington since Robert Griffin III in 2012, ushering in a new
era of hope and excitement for the franchise.
The 6'4", 210-pound LSU standout was widely regarded as one of the top
quarterbacks in this year's draft class. His exceptional 2023 season saw him
amass 3,812 passing yards, 40 touchdowns through the air, and an additional
1,134 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns on the ground.
Daniels' dynamic playmaking ability led him to become the third LSU Tiger
to hoist the prestigious Heisman Trophy,
capping off a remarkable year that also included being named the AP College
Football Player of the Year and a consensus All-American.
Daniels' journey to the NFL has been one of perseverance and growth. He
spent his first three collegiate seasons at Arizona State before transferring
to LSU in 2022, where he flourished under the bright lights of the SEC. His
collegiate career boasts an impressive 12,750 passing yards, 89 touchdown
passes, 3,307 rushing yards, and 34 rushing touchdowns, making him the only
player in FBS history to achieve both 12,000 passing yards and 3,000 rushing
yards.
"My journey overall to get to this point... I wouldn't trade it for anything,"
Daniels reflected at the NFL Scouting Combine. "When I transferred, I just
wanted to go out and have the opportunity to compete against the best. The
SEC, you play the best competition and the best football."
The Commanders are gaining a dynamic dual-threat quarterback with
exceptional anticipation and accuracy, particularly on short and intermediate
throws. His ability to extend plays with his legs adds another dimension to
Washington's offense, creating exciting possibilities for the future.
